National Women’s Day 2021: 142nd Birthday of Sarojini Naidu- the “Nightingale of Indian”

“National Women’s Day” is celebrated to honor the achievements and success of women of our country in the different fields and to empower them.

National women’s day is celebrated every year on 13th February to mark the birth anniversary of a great freedom fighter and an amazing poet of our country-Sarojini Naidu, Popularly known as “the Nightingale of India” or  “the Bharat Kokila” in Hindi.

Sarojini Naidu was not only a famous political activist but also an amazing poet. Throughout her life, she always contributed to uplifting, empowering, and striving for women.

Sarojini Naidu played a great role in the struggle for the independence of India, during British rule. She actively participated in the “civil disobedience movement” and the “quit India movement”.

She was also imprisoned for almost 21 months during the quit India movement of Mahatma Gandhi.

To honor the contributions of Sarojini Naidu for our country and for the women’s of our country, her Birth anniversary-

13 February is chosen to be celebrated as the “National Women’s Day” of India.

Though “International women’s day” is celebrated on 8th march all over, but in India “National Women’s Day” is celebrated on 13th Feb on the birthday of Sarojini Naidu. This year we are celebrating the 142nd birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu, on Feb13, 2021.

Sarojini Naidu became the first women resident of the Indian National Congress in the year 1925. and later became India’s first women governor amid the male dominant society.

she was appointed as the first women Governor of the United Province(now known as Uttar Pradesh) in the year 1947.

Sarojini Naidu has been always an inspiration for all the women’s all over.

In the “Nightingale of India”, Sarojini Naidu is also famous for her literary contributions all over the world. Many of her poems are also mentioned in the school curriculum.

Some of her famous poetries include-

  • Golden Threshold(1905),
  • The Bird of time,
  • The Broken Wing, 
  • The  magic Tree,
  • The wizard Mask, etc.

Sarojini Naidu is one of the most prominent figures of our country and did a lot for our country and also for women’s rights. So to memorize her contributions we celebrate her birth anniversary as national women’s day every year.
